On December 10, 2024, the Global Task Force on Cholera Control (GTFCC) held a dedicated symposium during the 17th Asian Conference on Diarrhoeal Disease and Nutrition (ASCODD) in Kathmandu, Nepal.

The session, moderated by Dr Krishna Prasad Paudel of Nepal’s Ministry of Health and Population, brought together key actors from across the cholera response community. Discussions provided a global overview of the current cholera crisis and included a presentation on the progress towards GTFCC’s 2030 Roadmap strategy. A regional perspective was shared by Dr Abhishek Rimal (IFRC), with a country spotlight on Bangladesh delivered by Dr Firdausi Qadri (icddr,b), underscoring national progress and persistent challenges.

The symposium served as a platform to reflect on the progress and gaps in the fight against cholera, with focused discussions on Oral Cholera Vaccine deployment (presented by Allyson Russell, Gavi), and the role of WASH in sustainable cholera elimination (led by Peter Maes, UNICEF Bangladesh). Participants engaged in an open dialogue on the major obstacles to ending cholera, including climate change, funding constraints, supply chain bottlenecks, and coordination challenges. The session highlighted the need for continued political commitment and cross-sectoral collaboration to meet the 2030 target of cholera elimination in endemic countries.
